On Being Asked, “Have You Written Anything Yet About Your Mother’s Death?”

No…no, I haven’t.
There aren’t any angels
to consult, and if there were,
they’d hurl themselves
like despondent drunks
onto the gleaming knives
and spears of the spires below.
Instead, only birds scatter
at the approach of dark,
and I try not to see too much,
the forgeries and desecrations,
or the black snow collecting
on the floor of my heart.



 


Howard Good is a journalism professor at SUNY New Paltz and author of the poetry chapbook, Death of the Frog Prince (FootHills Publishing). His poems have appeared in numerous print and online journals, including The Rose & Thorn (Winter 2002, Spring 2004, and Fall 2005).
