Bones Alone Are Lonely

by

Josef Lesser

some throw cubes of ancient dice
others spin the wheel

cards are shuffled
bingo numbers fall

twenty seven
stars in heaven
thirty nine
hell is fine

merriment is alive
in the casino of bones

they gamble with nothing
and nothing to lose

lawns are groomed
cemetery gates shined

jazz is played on a tibia
a quartet of clavicle
carpals and skull
to the beat of skeletal time

so for reference
choose a crowded space
not the lonely spot
beyond the burnt-down shack

join the gambling group
where visitors leave daisies

pebbles washed with tears
and queue to exit day

The author writes: “ I live with my wife in Coffs Harbour, which is on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, Australia. In my retirement I commenced writing poetry as a mode of sharing my thoughts and experiences with others. I believe poems are as distinct from one person to another as fingerprints.”
