What I Hold

by

J. L. Teagle

An egg is a paradox,
a white and
unfathomed word.

The one I threw
at you, wrong,
so you misunderstood.

An egg in my palm
nests as if made
to fit that spot.

This is the one I keep.
The word I know
is right, the one
I should give you,
is warming
in my hand

even as the rest of me
goes cold.
