I am older now and voices
are harder to hear, like the excited
laughter of children building their
monuments at the brink
of the ocean.

I feel the sand
between my toes and down my clothes
scratching up memories of
sunburned cheeks, freckled noses, and crabs
in a shoe box clicking for their
freedom.

As the tide recedes, I feel
the coolness of my skin.
The beach quiets, and the sun
melts into the colors
of the horizon.

The soft tongues of waves
lick the pebbles at my feet, and
the silence is chilling.

At the age of 15, transplanted northerner C.D. Clark took naturally to the easy pace of gracious Southern living. Now a retired executive secretary, mother of three wonderful children, proud grandmother of four, and former member of the Jackson Symphonic Orchestra, she discovered, in 1997, that her love for music could manifest itself in more ways than one. Appreciating the “music” of poetry, she began searching for her own voice, delighting in the rhythm and flow of words and the freedom of expression found only in written verse. Her poetry can be found published in In The Company Of Women and Southern Breezes.
