She runs from the SS Soldier,
out the door, far into the field.
She plants herself
among tall green corn stalks,
ears tipped with silk touch her face;
its tender caress makes her cry
as each hard breath begs for life.
Over her head
the gold medallion sun
evaporates tears; its brilliance
magnifies the insignificance
of one Jewish girl hidden
under the vast blue sky.
The Nazis cant see her,
nor does the world. Birds fly
on the tail wind of freedom;
bees buzz from field to field
while her feet, covered with dirt
root deep in the shadow of memory.
In the growth, night falls in silence.
Stars now illuminate the sky
with its cold blanket of fire.
Her soul burns with every
other Jew who lies in darkness.
Their courage, an internal flame
will glow as inspiration for the dawn.
LaLa Escapes is part of a collection I am working on entitled,
"The Poem Remembers." This will be my second chapbook. My first,
"One Woman," is available online at Barnes & Noble, and is a
tribute to my late mother-in-law. For further reference, my web site is: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/6480/
